British Journal of Photography [BJP] Issue 7909, Tradition & Identity

LAST CHANCE

Investigations on identity and community are at the heart of the stories told at British Journal of Photography. With this issue, BJP considers these subjects in relation to the theme of tradition. Through the lense of global photographers, we learn how customs are upheld and changed and explore whether they are still relevant today.

The main feature section includes the work of Guatemalan documentary photographer Juan Brenner, who explores tradition in relation to today’s youth in his homeland, and whose image graces this edition’s cover. Alys Tomlinson shares her latest portrait series of Italian villagers from Sicily, Sardinia and the Venetian Lagoon. And, Native American Apsáalooke artist Wendy Red Star is in conversation with Raquel Villar Pérez about her new monograph, Delegation. We speak to Baldwin Lee, a largely unknown photographer who shines an honest light on the hardships endured by the people of the American South in the 80s and still today. There are also special features on the new Barbican show chronicling the late, rallying feminist Carolee Schneeman’s oeuvre and a revisit of Larry Towell’s series, The Mennonites. Turkey’s photography scene is in focus, guided by the expertise of local writer and curator Merve Arkunlar.

Elsewhere, Caroline Tompkins visits David Brandon Geeting in his New York studio, and Lesley A. Martin of Aperture is our Any Answers interviewee. Do not miss our preview of the best upcoming photobooks in Bookshelf.

  • Our Ethos

Duality is in our DNA — our founders self-describe as polar opposites — but our vision for championing accessibility, diversity, and equality in the art world is a shared one. It informs everything we do, from the prints we sell to the stories we tell. Art is for everyone and there is no one way to be a collector.

  • Sustainability

Although we’re not perfect, we do pride ourselves on our packaging. We use as little as possible and have worked hard to find the most environmentally-friendly packaging on the market.

Our poster tubes and print boxes are eco-friendly, made from recycled content and fully recyclable. On occasion, to improve our carbon footprint, our prints will be shipped direct from our printers in co-branded packaging.

IN MY WORLD, THE BOOKS WOULD BE NOTHING BUT PICTURES. IN MY WORLD, THE BOOKS WOULD BE NOTHING BUT PICTURES

ECO PACKAGING

We’ve worked hard to find the most environmentally-friendly packaging on the market. Our books are wrapped in recyclable cardboard sleeves and fastened with paper-based tape. Our tape is water activated, so no need for any nasty adhesives or plastics. It’s made from 100% recycled content and printed with soy ink.

Our print boxes and poster tubes are also made from recycled cardboard and are fully recyclable. Finally, our tissue paper is - you guessed it -recycled, eco-friendly and vegan. It's PH neutral and approximately 35% of the electrics used to make it is produced from renewable energy.

Not a bad start 🌱
