PENUMBRAE BY JUUL KRAIJER

BOOKS & MAGAZINES

Juul Kraijer's practice draws upon Surrealist photography, using models as vehicles for ideas rather than portraits: "Without being literal, I’m employing the Surrealist grammar of alienation; mirroring, fusing of disparate entities, animating an object, objectifying a human body part, or casting a dazzling web of shadows on it." [Juul Kraijer]

Alongside Surrealist photography, the artist is inspired by some photos of Julia Magaret Cameron, fin-de-siècle medical photography and photographic documentation of séances. In particular, the portraits in which she incorporates snakes, barnowls and other creatures serve to displace the model and subvert the traditional hierarchies between human and animal, model and accessory.

The artist hired animal trainers, because their animals are specially trained to stay relaxed during photo shoots and the model was extremely courageous. In a situation that would normally arouse anxiety, the model preserves a stillness and grace reminiscent of Renaissance portraiture, further evoking a sense of an otherworldly, dream-like space through real encounters that border on the surreal. The stark images resist any specific time or context, conveying a sense of the eternal.

Visual artist Juul Kraijer was born in the Netherlands in 1970. Her work has been exhibited worldwide and features in the collections of major museums, including MoMA/New York, KIASMA/Helsinki, Museum Kunst Palast/Düsseldorf, Kupferstichka-binett Berlin and Museum Moderner Kunst/ Vienna. It has been awarded four Dutch artprizes.

  • Our Ethos

Duality is in our DNA — our founders self-describe as polar opposites — but our vision for championing accessibility, diversity, and equality in the art world is a shared one. It informs everything we do, from the prints we sell to the stories we tell. Art is for everyone and there is no one way to be a collector.

  • Sustainability

Although we’re not perfect, we do pride ourselves on our packaging. We use as little as possible and have worked hard to find the most environmentally-friendly packaging on the market.

Our poster tubes and print boxes are eco-friendly, made from recycled content and fully recyclable. On occasion, to improve our carbon footprint, our prints will be shipped direct from our printers in co-branded packaging.

IN MY WORLD, THE BOOKS WOULD BE NOTHING BUT PICTURES. IN MY WORLD, THE BOOKS WOULD BE NOTHING BUT PICTURES

ECO PACKAGING

We’ve worked hard to find the most environmentally-friendly packaging on the market. Our books are wrapped in recyclable cardboard sleeves and fastened with paper-based tape. Our tape is water activated, so no need for any nasty adhesives or plastics. It’s made from 100% recycled content and printed with soy ink.

Our print boxes and poster tubes are also made from recycled cardboard and are fully recyclable. Finally, our tissue paper is - you guessed it -recycled, eco-friendly and vegan. It's PH neutral and approximately 35% of the electrics used to make it is produced from renewable energy.
